Srinagar, Apr 25: A spell of intense heat has begun to affect parts of Jammu and Kashmir, with the plains of Jammu division witnessing unusually high temperatures and uncomfortable weather conditions over the past few days.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5°C on Saturday, which is more than five degrees above the seasonal average.

Night temperatures have also remained elevated, offering little relief to residents.

A senior official from the Meteorological Department said, “The current trend indicates a developing heat stress situation across the plains of Jammu division. Both day and night temperatures are staying above normal, which is a matter of concern.”Nearby areas have reported similar conditions.

Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the revered Vaishno Devi Temple, also experienced a sharp spike in temperature, intensifying discomfort for locals and tourists alike.Officials noted that isolated heatwave conditions are likely to persist in parts of Jammu division over the next few days. “Hot and dry weather is expected to continue, particularly in the plains.

People are advised to limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours,” the spokesperson added. While Kashmir valley has so far remained relatively moderate, weather experts caution that rising temperatures in the broader region could gradually influence local conditions. The department has not ruled out warmer-than-usual days ahead, especially if prevailing patterns continue.Health experts have also raised concerns about the impact of prolonged heat exposure. “Dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illnesses are common during such conditions. Extra care is needed for children, the elderly, and those with existing health issues,” a health official said.Authorities have urged residents to follow basic precautions, including staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

With no immediate relief in sight, residents across Jammu are bracing for a challenging week ahead as temperatures are expected to remain above normal before showing any significant decline.
