Shagufta Fatima says her ‘labour of love shows in flavours’ at ‘Salivate – The Food Saloon’
SRINAGAR, DEC 14: Shagufta Fatima, a young and determined entrepreneur hailing from Kashmir, has carved a niche for herself in the culinary landscape of Jammu by establishing a thriving Kashmiri Wazwan outlet in the city.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Fatima’s resilience and the support of her father have enabled her to create a unique dining experience, where customers savour the authentic flavours of Wazwan.
“There were many struggles in my life, but I never gave up hope. After completing my 12th grade, I explored various fields, including fashion designing. However, the turning point came when I decided to open this restaurant,” she recounted.
Expressing gratitude for her father’s support in establishing the business, Fatima added, “My dad played a pivotal role in helping me set up this Wazwan outlet. Now, not only Kashmiris but people from Jammu City also visit and enjoy the authentic taste of Wazwan. We cater to various events, from birthdays to wedding parties.”
One distinctive aspect of Fatima’s venture is her commitment to women empowerment. Being a woman herself, she actively employs female staff, both in the front and back of the house. “Most of my waiter employees are girls, and they serve food to customers in a traditional manner. Additionally, we have a team of 12 to 13 dedicated boys and girls who work tirelessly to prepare the delectable Wazwan dishes,” she proudly shared.
Fatima emphasized the availability of a diverse menu that not only offers traditional Wazwan dishes but also includes Chinese and Indian cuisines.
Shagufta herself takes pride in overseeing the preparation of these traditional dishes in the kitchen, ensuring that each plate served reflects the true essence of Wazwan. “I bet you, when you taste Wazwan here, you will find the special taste. As a woman, I personally go into the kitchen and supervise the making of these Wazwan dishes. It’s a labour of love, and I believe it shows in the flavours,” she shared.
“The special taste of our Wazwan has garnered appreciation from our customers, and I encourage everyone to try it,” she said with confidence.
Highlighting the evolving role of women in business, Fatima expressed, “It’s great to see women participating in every sector. A woman can achieve anything with courage. In today’s era, the government is focused on women empowerment, and I encourage girls to step forward and start their own ventures.”
