Baramulla, Nov 06: In a significant step toward tech-enabled policing, the Baramulla Police on Thursday launched Jammu and Kashmir’s first digital safety application designed to enhance citizen security and ensure swift emergency response.
Titled “Baramulla Safety App,” the platform enables residents to send instant SOS alerts that reach the police control room within five seconds, allowing duty officers to track and respond immediately.
Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa said the initiative bridges the communication gap between citizens and law enforcement agencies, ensuring quick police intervention during emergencies. Over 6,000 residents, including migrants, non-local workers, and students, have already registered on the app.
The app connects all police stations across the district to a central monitoring system overseen by SHOs, DOs, and the Police Control Room. It currently supports 15 enrolment categories, with a focus on migrants, non-local employees, and families affected by terrorism.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gurinderpal Singh described the platform as adaptive and scalable, noting that it will evolve with emerging security needs. He added that any vulnerable person — including journalists, political workers, and other at-risk individuals — can register for assistance and protection.
Officials hailed the initiative as a model of “tech-driven policing,” expected to redefine community safety mechanisms in north Kashmir and serve as a template for similar efforts across the Union Territory.
