Campaigning wraps up for Phase-1, 219 candidates await verdict of 23.27 lakh voters

Srinagar, Sep 16: The campaigning for the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir has culminated on Monday evening while the stage is all set for the voting on Wednesday here with a total of 219 candidates in the electoral fray.
Of 219 candidates, 92 independent candidates are also vying for the seats in seven different districts of Jammu and Kashmir where the elections will take place on September 18, 2024.
A total of 24 Assembly Constituencies spread over seven districts will go to polls in the first phase. The districts include Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian.
As per the details shared by the poll body, over 23.27 lakh voters including 5.66 lakh youths are eligible to exercise their electoral franchise during the Phase-I of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election, scheduled to be held on 18 September 2024.
11.76 lakh among them are male voters and 11.51 lakh are female voters along with 60 Third Gender electors, the details reveal.
As per the figures, 25 candidates from these 24 constituencies withdrew their nomination papers following the scrutiny on August 28.
During the scrutiny of the nomination papers filed by 279 candidates, the candidature of 244 candidates was found valid as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, while the nomination papers of 35 candidates, which were found invalid, were rejected.
As per the figures, the highest number of 14 candidates are vying for Pampore seat, which includes seven independents as well. The lowest number of candidates are in the Srigufwara-Bijbehara seat with only three candidates vying for the seat.
Besides Pampore and Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Pulwama, Rajpora, Zainapora, Shopian, DH Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Dooru, Kokernag ST, Anantnag West, Anantnag, Shangus-Anantnag East, Pahalgam, Inderwal, Kishtwar, Padder-Nagseni, Bhaderwah, Doda, Doda West, Ramban and Banihal constituencies are going to polls tomorrow.
Massive campaigning was witnessed throughout these days as the national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Malikkarjun Kharge and others addressed the gathering in Jammu division, attracting the voters towards the respective party candidates for the betterment of their constituencies.
