Football fans anticipate exciting start of RKFC in I-League

SRINAGAR, OCT 26: Football fans in Kashmir are eagerly anticipating the start of the I-League, with Real Kashmir Football Club (RKFC) preparing for their first match against Rajasthan United Football Club on October 28 at TRC Stadium in Srinagar.

The I-League is a prestigious football competition featuring both international and national players, with 13 teams participating for the 2023-2024 season over the next five months. RKFC, owned by Kashmiri Pandit Sandeep Chatoo, is the sole representative from Jammu and Kashmir in this league.

Sandeep’s goal has been to establish RKFC as one of the country’s top clubs and create a platform for local talent to represent the national team and international teams. The RKFC players, hailing from various countries, including six foreigners and different Indian states, are putting in hard work to ensure an impressive performance in front of their home fans in Kashmir. This season, there is a focus on promoting local talent within the team.

The club has also enlisted the services of a respected local coach and former international player, Ishfaq Ahmad, who brings valuable experience from his time representing the Indian national football team. RKFC is scheduled to play at least 24 matches, with half of them taking place in Kashmir and the remainder in various states across the country. The I-League, organized by the All India Football Federation, will be broadcast on various sports channels.

RKFC fans in Kashmir have eagerly awaited the return of their home team to Srinagar.

“The I-League is a significant event for football enthusiasts in the region, and we hope to witness RKFC’s strong performance. Over the past seven years, RKFC has achieved remarkable victories against top Indian football clubs, such as East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Churchill Brothers,” said Mohammad Shahid, a resident of Rajbagh.

In previous years, the team was under the guidance of Scottish football coach David Robertson, but they have recently embraced local coaching talent. Notably, RKFC has also competed in various international tournaments, with a highlight being their victory in the 123rd edition of the IFA Shield tournament in December 2020, where they defeated George Telegraph at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
