Celebrating Women Empowerment and Nurturing Talent in the Valley
Baramulla, Oct 29: In a remarkable celebration of women empowerment and the spirit of sportsmanship, the Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Kashmir Women’s Premier League (KWPL) commenced today in Baramulla. The tournament, scheduled to continue till 6th November 2025, brings together young women athletes from across the Valley.
Dedicated to the memory of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, Late Gen Bipin Rawat, the league aims to inspire Kashmiri women to pursue excellence in sports and leadership. The event features 16 teams — including 8 professional squads from various districts of Kashmir and 8 amateur teams representing local schools and colleges — competing in a series of thrilling matches leading up to a grand finale on November 6.
Jointly organized by the Indian Army, the Baramulla Cricket Forum, and the District Administration Baramulla, the tournament reflects a shared commitment to peace, progress, and empowerment in the Valley.
The KWPL not only showcases the growing participation of Kashmiri women in mainstream sports but also symbolizes the region’s resilience, unity, and drive for empowerment through athletics. Beyond the competition, the league seeks to nurture camaraderie, confidence, and ambition among young women, encouraging them to dream big and represent Kashmir at higher levels.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Abdul Khaliq Wani, Chairman of the Baramulla Cricket Forum, said:
“The Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial KWPL is a tribute to the late General’s vision of a confident and empowered youth in Kashmir. It reflects the growing sense of aspiration and pride among the people of the Valley. The Baramulla Cricket Forum welcomes all teams, JKCA officials, and spectators to Baramulla. Such events provide a vital platform for young women players to come forward and showcase their talent. I congratulate the Dagger Division, Indian Army, and all contributors for organizing such a remarkable tournament.”

In an exciting inaugural match, Baramulla defeated Kupwara by 125 runs, with Ms. Jasia Akhtar named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 102 runs off 46 balls. In the second match, Bandipora triumphed over Srinagar by 65 runs, as Ms. Anisa Majeed earned Player of the Match honors for her 75 runs off 46 balls.
