Srinagar, Feb 19: Amid growing political attention over renovation works at the revered
worded statement, asserting that all decisions concerning the shrine are guided by faith,
The response comes in the wake of remarks made by MLA Tanvir Sadiq, who had raised concerns regarding the recent reconstruction and beautification initiatives at the historic shrine.
Maintaining a composed tone, the Board underlined that the sanctity of the shrine remains paramount, particularly because it houses the revered Moi-e-Muqaddas, believed to be a sacred relic of Prophet Muhammad. It described the relic as the “most
priceless spiritual treasure” and said every intervention at the shrine is undertaken with
deep reverence and awareness of the emotions attached to it.
Addressing specific concerns, the Board clarified that the installation of new
chandeliers, including one in the main sanctum, was carried out after due consideration
of safety and preservation requirements. The newly installed piece, inscribed with Quranic verses, has been designed to complement the shrine’s traditional aesthetics while enhancing its spiritual ambience.
“All works are executed with utmost care to maintain both structural integrity and the
sacred character of the shrine,” the statement said, adding that no historical element has been lost in the process.
The Board further clarified that the older chandelier and related fixtures have been securely preserved in accordance with established procedures. It rejected suggestions that any item of historical or sentimental importance had been discarded.
Without directly confronting the criticism, the Waqf Board urged restraint and sensitivity
in public discussions surrounding religious institutions. It emphasised that the shrine
holds deep emotional significance for millions and should not become a subject of political contention.
“Hazratbal is not merely a structure but a symbol of faith and unity. Any discourse concerning it must reflect collective responsibility and respect,” the statement noted.
Officials said the renovation works were aimed at improving facilities, ensuring safety, and creating a more serene environment for devotees. According to the Board, feedback from visitors has largely been positive, with many appreciating the enhanced
sense of calm and dignity at the shrine.
Reaffirming its position, the Waqf Board said it remains committed to safeguarding the
sanctity of the relic and preserving the spiritual legacy of Hazratbal, while continuing
necessary improvements in line with tradition and the needs of future generations.
