JAMMU, JAN 05: As the cold wave tightens its grip on the Jammu division, coupled with the persistent dense fog, health experts are urging residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard their well-being.
The plummeting temperatures and reduced visibility due to the fog have raised concerns among medical professionals who warn of potential health hazards.
Senior doctor Dr. Parveen Yugraj emphasizes the need for the public to be vigilant and adopt measures to mitigate the impact of the harsh weather conditions on their health.
Dr. Yugraj stated, “Cold weather and dense fog can significantly impact respiratory health, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or cardiovascular diseases. It is crucial for everyone to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of respiratory distress and other related ailments.”
Health authorities are advising residents to follow various essential guidelines.
“Wear multiple layers of warm clothing to trap body heat and protect against the biting cold. This is particularly crucial for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children. Despite the cold weather, it’s essential to stay adequately hydrated. The dry air can dehydrate the body, making it necessary to drink sufficient water throughout the day.
Those with respiratory conditions should wear masks to shield themselves from inhaling cold air and pollutants. Additionally, maintaining good indoor air quality is vital by using air purifiers or keeping windows slightly open for ventilation. Minimize outdoor activities, especially during early morning and late evening when the cold is most intense. If outdoor ventures are necessary, cover the nose and mouth to prevent direct exposure to the cold air,” the authorities said.
“Engage in light indoor exercises to keep the body active and maintain optimal blood circulation. This helps in combating the stiffness caused by the cold weather. The public is encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to the recommended precautions to ensure their health and well-being during this challenging period of extreme weather conditions in the Jammu division”.
Meanwhile one of the Pulmonologist here in Jammu Medical college shared crucial advice outlining the risk factors and preventive measures essential for maintaining a healthy respiratory system.
The doctor highlighted that exposure to freezing temperatures puts strain on the heart and lungs, emphasizing that cold air can lead to symptoms such as cough, running nose, sore throat, and headaches.
He cautioned that individuals can safeguard themselves during the cold season by utilizing warm accessories like scarves, hand gloves, and sweaters to regulate the body’s core temperature.
He stressed the importance of covered footwear in extremely cold environments to prevent frostbites and advised against smoking, as it increases the risk of asthma and heart attacks in those with pre-existing conditions.
Doctors also recommended avoiding the consumption of cold water and taking measures to prevent hypothermia, such as using warm blankets and heaters.
Additionally, they advised the use of moisturizers to keep the skin healthy and hydrated, and emphasized the need to maintain adequate Vitamin D levels through sunlight exposure and supplements, if recommended by a healthcare professional. These collective insights from medical experts aim to guide individuals in taking proactive measures to protect their respiratory health amidst challenging weather conditions.
