J&K braces for rain, thunderstorm today

Srinagar, May 20: The Meteorological Department has predicted light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, May 21, with weather conditions expected to remain partly to generally cloudy during the day.

According to the MeT Centre Srinagar, scattered to many places across Kashmir and Jammu divisions are likely to witness spells of rain and thundershowers, mainly during afternoon and evening hours. The department has also warned of isolated hailstorm activity and strong winds in vulnerable areas.

Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said the prevailing weather system may trigger brief but intense weather activity in several districts.“On May 21, Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness light to moderate rain and thunderstorm activity at scattered places, especially during afternoon and evening hours,” Dr Ahmad said.

He further stated that gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are expected at several places, while a few areas may experience stronger gusts exceeding 60 kmph.“There is also a possibility of lightning and isolated hailstorms. People are advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing into open areas during thunderstorm activity,” he added.

The MeT Department said the weather is expected to improve gradually from May 22, with mainly dry conditions likely during morning hours over the subsequent days, although isolated afternoon showers cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, isolated parts of the Jammu division may continue to experience hot conditions during the day on Wednesday despite the forecast of evening rain and cloud cover.
