SRINAGAR, FEB 22: Jammu and Kashmir is ready to host major international sports events in the future, said Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Nitish Pramanik on Wednesday.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Khelo India Winter Games 2024 being held in Gulmarg.
Praising the organization of the event, Pramanik said this edition of the Khelo India Winter Games has been the best so far. “Athletes and sports enthusiasts from across India have come together here to showcase their talent to the world,” he noted.
The Minister stated that the government is prepared to conduct international sporting events in J&K going forward. “We want to prove that our athletes can compete at the highest levels. Along with national events, we look forward to hosting global tournaments here as well,” he said.
Priority is being given to building sports infrastructure in the Union Territory, he added.
Pramanik said the situation in J&K has transformed after the abrogation of Article 370. “People are now visiting without any fear, wanting to experience the hospitality of Kashmiris,” he remarked.
He congratulated the UT administration and sports council for upgrading facilities, stating it has provided a strong foundation for local youth to excel.
The Minister reiterated that PM Modi’s vision of creating a sports nation is being realized under Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s leadership.
Pramanik also noted that with world-class infrastructure, Kashmir is emerging as a replacement for Switzerland as a winter sports destination. “We have seen athletes from Switzerland itself coming here,” he highlighted.
The 4-day Khelo India Winter Games are slated to conclude on February 25. Over 1,500 athletes are competing across 8 sports.
