J&K witnesses massive transformation in diverse sectors

SRINAGAR, AUG 24: For the last three years under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a remarkable transformation across diverse sectors, paving the way for growth and new job opportunities.

According to official details available with Morning Kashmir, there has been remarkable progress in various sectors from road infrastructure to bringing investment and creating new job opportunities for the youth in the Union Territory.

There has been a rapid pace of developmental works for the last several years. All these projects are contributing to the prosperity and well-being of citizens in remote areas, enhance tourism potential, and connect important commercial centres.

J&K has been looking to bring in investments in diverse sectors, including tourism and hospitality, education, health, agriculture, tourism, IT, handicrafts, food processing units, pharmaceuticals, skill development, milk, poultry and wool, infrastructure and real estate, herbal and medicine plant, film sector, renewable energy, and others.

According to official figures, the Jammu and Kashmir government has received investment proposals worth Rs 73,376 crore from investors. These will create huge job opportunities for the youth of the Union Territory.

Similarly, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has been focusing on road connectivity across J&K.

To reduce the traffic congestion in Srinagar and Jammu, the twin cities are expected to have a metro rail network in place within the next two years.

The move is aimed at boosting the public transport system and economic activities in the region.

As per the official details, the Detailed Project Report for the light metro rail transit system for Srinagar and Jammu cities has been finalized and submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The cost of the project will be Rs 7942 crore.

A senior official said, “J&K administration’s objective is maximum utilization of industries, manufacturing, services sector, village industries, handicraft, tourism and technology to create more jobs in rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir because there is a vast yet untapped talent pool in our villages waiting for an opportunity. We need proper infrastructure in place like better road connectivity. The new roads have connected remote Gujjar, Bakerwal, and farming communities to urban centres.”

As per the official details, the daily average macdamisation during 2017-2020 was 8.57 km which rose to 15.57 km per day during 2020-2023.

The figures reveal that 16,807 km of roads have been macadamized during the last three years under various central and UT sector schemes.

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an immense strength in rural connectivity as 2967 Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) projects covering 17,798 km connecting 2096 habitations have been completed. Last year, Jammu and Kashmir was ranked among the top three performing States/UTs at the national level for construction of road length per year under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). J&K maintained its rank as the Public Works Department (R&B) constructed PMGSY road length of 3284 km during the year 2021-22 and connected 114 habitations through road networks by executing 427 schemes in the year.
