Srinagar, Mar 15: From now on, the iconic Kashmiri carpets and shawls will have a modern Kerala touch, thanks to new artificial intelligence software developed to digitize the ancient Talim inscription system used by traditional Kashmiri weavers.
The Talim software, created by Technopark-based International Virtual Assistance Pvt. Ltd., uses machine learning to reconstruct and generate the symbolic Talim codes that provide instructions for carpet patterns, colors, and weaving techniques.
“By digitizing Talim, we can better retain and precisely replicate these traditional designs on carpets,” said lead developer at IVA. “Weavers often struggle when customers just show a design on their phone. Our software will allow for much greater accuracy.”
Talim is a unique weaving language developed over centuries in Kashmir. The coded inscriptions, similar to ancient palm leaf scripts, contain all the information weavers need to handcraft the intricate patterned carpets and shawls for which the region is renowned worldwide. Typically it takes three to six months for artisans to weave a single carpet while singing the knotted Talim codes rhythmically.
The project to digitize Talim was carried out in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and the Indian government’s Agni Mission aimed at using technology to preserve heritage crafts. By reducing the manual labour involved, officials hope the software will boost the production of these celebrated traditional textiles.
“This is a proud breakthrough that blends modern AI with our rich artisanal heritage,” said a craft instructor. “The Talim codes will now be precisely documented for future generations through an innovative Made-in-Kerala technology solution.”
