Srinagar Dec 20: With Kashmir grappling with the growing challenge of drug abuse among young people, Sheikh Siyaan Rais stands out as an unlikely yet powerful voice of resistance.
A student, campaigner, and peer counsellor, the Srinagar-based youth has taken it upon himself to confront one of the most pressing social issues affecting Kashmir’s future.
Sheikh Siyaan Rais, son of Rayees Ahmed Sheikh of Srinagar, is a student of Foundation World School and has recently appeared for his IGCSE (O Levels) examinations. At an age when most teenagers are focused solely on academics, he has chosen to balance his studies with a larger social mission—raising awareness about the dangers of drug addiction and steering young people towards education, health, and positive living.
Alarmed by the increasing number of adolescents falling prey to substance abuse, Sheikh Siyaan launched a grassroots anti-drug campaign aimed at reaching students and youth at the community level. Through one-on-one counselling, small group discussions, and public interactions, he speaks openly about the physical, psychological, and social damage caused by drug addiction.
“I believe the youth must focus on their studies, their health, and their future,” he says, stressing that awareness and early guidance can prevent many young lives from being derailed.
His approach is simple yet impactful—peer-to-peer conversations that resonate more deeply than lectures or warnings from authority figures.
His efforts recently gained wider attention when he addressed a gathering in Srinagar organised by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)..
Speaking with confidence and conviction, Sheikh Siyaan highlighted the alarming spread of drugs among adolescents and young adults, urging parents, teachers, and society to take collective responsibility. His address was widely appreciated for its honesty, clarity, and youthful perspective.
Beyond political platforms, Sheikh Siyaan has participated in and addressed several seminars and awareness programmes focused on drug abuse prevention. He consistently promotes healthy alternatives such as sports, constructive hobbies, and academic engagement, emphasising the importance of both mental and physical well-being.
“Youth are the backbone of society. If they are lost to drugs, the future is at risk,” he said.
By taking a stand at a young age, Sheikh Siyaan Rais is not only raising awareness about drug abuse but also inspiring a generation to choose purpose, discipline, and hope over addiction.
