Srinagar, Nov 27: After a prolonged wait, the girls’ hostel at Kashmir University is finally set to open within the next week, bringing much-needed relief to female students grappling with high rents, safety concerns, and challenging commutes from off-campus accommodations.
Kashmir University Registrar, Prof. Naseer Iqbal informed Morning Kashmir “This is a matter of utmost importance because it directly concerns the safety of our female students. We have worked to ensure the hostel is fully prepared so that students don’t face any inconvenience. The good news is that the hostel will be operational this week, and the accommodation list is expected to be released soon,” he said.
The opening of the hostel is seen as a significant step towards addressing long-standing housing challenges for female students. Many students have struggled with the high cost of off-campus accommodations and the lack of basic facilities.
“The rents around the campus are exorbitantly high, and the available accommodations often lack even basic amenities. It’s not just about affordability—safety is our biggest concern,” said Sana, a student at the university.
Safety has been a critical issue for students living off-campus, with many accommodations located in poorly lit or unsecured areas. Commuting at night has added to the risk, leaving students and their families anxious.
Tahira, another student, expressed her hopes for the hostel’s timely opening. “We’ve heard such promises before, but I truly hope this time the wait ends, and we can finally move into the hostel,” she said, echoing the cautious optimism of many students.
As winter sets in, the university administration is taking measures to ensure that the hostel is well-equipped for the harsh weather. Heating arrangements and other essential provisions are being put in place to provide a comfortable living environment.
The opening of the girls’ hostel aligns with the university’s broader efforts to enhance its infrastructure and support students. By providing affordable and secure on-campus housing, the university aims to reduce the financial strain on students and enable them to focus on their studies.
The hostel is expected to accommodate a significant number of female students, alleviating the growing demand for secure housing options. With the accommodation list set to be released soon, students are eagerly waiting to finalize their living arrangements and move into a space that promises both safety and comfort.
