JAMMU, FEB 08: The central government’s flagship rural development schemes – Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) – have made significant progress in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory over the last three years.

As per information provided by Minister of State Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in Lok Sabha, over 1.43 lakh houses have been constructed under PMAY-G in J&K between 2020-2023. During 2020-21, 64,030 houses were sanctioned, of which 21,569 were completed.

In 2021-22, 55,841 houses were sanctioned, and 42,515 were completed. In 2022-23 so far, 7,804 houses have been sanctioned, of which 79,271 have been completed.

Under PMGSY, 10,357 km of roads have been laid in J&K in the last five years. In 2018-19, 1,559 km was constructed, followed by 1,175 km in 2019-20, 3,167 km in 2020-21, 3,283 km in 2021-22, 462 km in 2022-23, and 711 km till January 2024.

The robust progress under PMAY-G and PMGSY assumes significance given J&K’s challenging hilly terrain and security situation. The schemes have provided rural connectivity and housing to thousands of beneficiaries.

To ensure targeted delivery, PMAY-G beneficiaries are identified using the deprivation parameters in the 2011 Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data. Currently, around 2.04 crore people are eligible as per the SECC database. The speedy implementation of these flagship rural schemes indicates the Centre’s commitment to inclusive development in J&K post abrogation of Article 370. With ramped up budget allocations, the schemes are driving economic and social empowerment in remote areas.
