Pattan AC no longer a cakewalk for any candidate

Constituency favours NC-Cong candidates 9 times out of 11 polls since 1962

Srinagar, Sep 27: While the campaigning is full on ahead of the third and last phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly election on October 01, Pattan is one among the 40 segments going to the polls on Tuesday where a total of 1.03 lakh eligible voters will be deciding the fate of 13 candidates in the electoral fray.
The details available with The Morning Kashmir, reveals that the constituency has mostly sided with the National Conference (NC) and Congress candidates since 1962 as out of the ten elections and one by-election, the voters in the constituency have preferred to side with the candidates from two parties only as they have emerged victorious nine times till 2014.

One among the candidates, who emerged victorious on both NC and Congress tickets in the past is late Iftikhar Ahmad Ansari, whose son Imran Raza Ansari clinched the victory in 2014 elections after getting a ticket from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
As the constituency is heading for the electoral battle, there are a total of 1,03,069 eligible voters which include 51,217 male, 51,850 female and two Transgender.
With Ansari in the electoral fray, it would be an interesting contest on the seat to see whether the voters will go as per routine by supporting NC and Congress or will choose Imran Raza Ansari for the second straight time.
From 1962, the constituency has sided with NC for seven times and favoured INC candidates twice.
Since the two parties have already entered into a pre-poll alliance, the political pundits believe that the situation is very difficult for the candidates as it will not be a cakewalk for anyone.
“Though Imran Ansari being a religious cleric has a good fan base within the constituency, but a large chunk of population has been favouring the NC and INC parties, therefore, the contest would be tough and it would be difficult to predict the win in this situation,” the political pundits believe.
Moreover, the preparations are going on while the authorities have set up 119 polling stations including seven in urban areas and 112 in rural areas.
