SRINAGAR, DEC 16: In a significant move to tackle power losses and enhance efficiency in the power sector, the Power Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir has accelerated the installation of smart meters.
Official figures indicate that a total of 4.21 lakh smart meters have been successfully installed in the Union Territory so far.
Jammu and Kashmir’s power sector has long been a concern for the exchequer due to substantial losses, and authorities believe that comprehensive metering is the key to reducing pilferage and curbing losses.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the implementation of Smart Pre-paid metering is progressing in three phases in Jammu and Kashmir, with 4.21 lakh smart meters already operational.
In addition to focusing on metering, the government is also working towards increasing power generation in the region. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed for the development of five mega projects under Hydro Power generation, namely Sawlakote (1856 MW), Dul Hasti stage-II (258 MW), URI -I stage -II (240 MW), Kirthai (930 MW), and Rattle (850 MW). The total capacity of these projects is estimated to be 4134 MW, with a significant investment of Rs. 34,882 Crores flowing into Jammu and Kashmir.
To expedite the installation of smart meters across the region, the government has set a deadline for every household in Jammu and Kashmir to have smart meters by the year 2025-26.
A senior Power Development Department, stated that tenders for the installation of an additional 14 lakh smart meters in the remaining villages have already been allotted.
Official said that the tendering process adhered to transparent guidelines and a fair selection process. He stated, “The work for the installation of 14 lakh more smart meters will begin very soon.” These meters will be installed in the third phase, following the installation of 1.25 lakh smart meters in the first phase and 5.5 lakh in the second phase, which is currently underway and expected to be completed within the next month or two.” The government’s comprehensive approach, combining smart meter installation and increased power generation, aims to modernize the power infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, bringing about long-term benefits for both the exchequer and the residents of the Union Territory.
