Srinagar, June 18: As the holy month of Muharram progresses, dozens of Sabeels have been established across Srinagar, offering water, sherbet and other refreshments to passersby, commuters and mourners alike. Organized by local volunteers, youth groups and religious organizations, the initiative has become a visible symbol of compassion, service and remembrance during the sacred month.
From major city intersections to neighborhood lanes, volunteers can be seen serving cold drinks and water throughout the day, particularly amid the summer heat. The Sabeels are drawing people from all walks of life, reflecting the universal message of humanity associated with the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala.
Residents said the initiative not only provides relief to the public but also serves as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, patience and selfless service that define the events of Karbala.
“Setting up a Sabeel is our humble way of honoring the legacy of Imam Hussain (AS). The message of Karbala is not limited to a particular community; it teaches us to stand for truth, justice and humanity,” said Syed Ali, a volunteer overseeing a Sabeel in downtown Srinagar.
Many of the stalls are being managed by young volunteers who spend hours distributing refreshments free of cost. Organizers said the response from the public has been overwhelming, with residents appreciating the spirit of generosity and communal harmony displayed during Muharram.
“People from different backgrounds stop by for water and refreshments. Serving them gives us a sense of fulfillment and allows us to contribute to the values that Imam Hussain (AS) stood for,” said Mohammad Raza, a youth volunteer.
The Sabeels have also become centers of social goodwill, with local residents contributing funds, supplies and their time to ensure that the services continue throughout the month.
“These stalls are more than just places to distribute water. They remind us of the thirst endured by Imam Hussain (AS), his family and companions in Karbala. Through this service, we keep their memory alive and promote kindness within society,” said a local religious scholar.
Citizens visiting the Sabeels praised the volunteers for their dedication and commitment.
“The weather has been quite warm, and these Sabeels provide much-needed relief. More importantly, they spread a message of unity, compassion and service to humanity,” said Abdul Hamid, a resident.
As Muharram observances continue, the Sabeels across Srinagar stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of Karbala, embodying the principles of sacrifice, generosity and care for others that remain central to the teachings of Imam Hussain (AS).
