Sugar Industry and Sugarcane Development Department prepare action plan
Current gross value output of sugarcane industry stands at Rs 1.32 lakh crore
Lucknow, April 20: The sugarcane and sugar industry is set to play a crucial role in realizing Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ambitious vision of transforming Uttar Pradesh into a one-trillion-dollar economy. To this end, the state government has set an ambitious target to raise the sector’s gross value output (GVO) from the current Rs 1.32 lakh crore to over Rs 1.62 lakh crore by 2027–28.
According to the Sugar Industry and Sugarcane Development Department, the GVO has grown consistently in recent years—from Rs 1,24,198 crore in 2023–24 to Rs 1,32,024 crore in 2024–25. The target for 2027–28 is expected to reflect an annual growth rate of 7% in sugarcane production and 10% in jaggery production.
The department has prepared a comprehensive action plan for 2025–26 to realise these goals. Key initiatives include increasing the sugar recovery rate from 9.56% to 10.50%, ensuring timely sale of 91.54 lakh quintals of stored sugar to curb losses, and expanding storage capacity by 4 lakh quintals.
Additionally, the department aims to reduce dependence on government assistance—currently around Rs 1,200 crore—by steering the industry toward self-reliance.
To strengthen operations, skilled manpower will also be hired through outsourcing by May 15, 2025.The Yogi government’s transformative efforts have significantly improved the lives of sugarcane farmers. A total of 65 lakh registered farmers and 46.5 lakh supplier farmers have directly benefited from various government initiatives. By March 2025, more than Rs 2.80 lakh crore will have been disbursed as sugarcane dues, which will substantially improve farmers’ financial well-being.Since 2016– 17, the area under sugarcane cultivation has increased by 43%, productivity has risen by 16%, and overall production has surged by 68%. In addition, 52 sugar mills have been modernized, and ethanol production has received a major boost, reaching a daily capacity of around 8,000 kilolitres—further diversifying the sector and adding value.
The initiatives being spearheaded under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are receiving widespread recognition. His forward-thinking vision and decisive governance have empowered farmers economically and positioned the sugarcane industry as a vital pillar of the state’s economic growth.
By championing this sector, the Yogi government has reaffirmed that farmers’ prosperity is central to Uttar Pradesh’s holistic development.
