Traffic Chaos: Fines Alone Can’t Cure Road Recklessness

Srinagar, Nov 18: With the government acting tough against the traffic norm violations in Srinagar and elsewhere, but the question remains whether the measures being taken will be fruitful in preventing the road traffic accidents as the multiple other grave issues like occupation of roadsides and further congesting the roads for commuting has remained an unnecessary matter.
The present action against the underage and traffic norm violations is a commendable job, but the locals residents have raised a query over the non-action against the removal of roadside occupation here.
Asif Ramzan, a local resident from the City area here stated that the already congested roads are being further jam-packed with the occupation of roadsides by the street vendors and the shopkeepers.
“While the efforts against the traffic norm violation is the need of the hour, at the same time, there is a need to check the roadside occupation as well, which would help in decongesting the roads and prevent the number of road accidents,” Ramzan said.
The commuters also raised a query over the issue and demanded that the roads must be cleared from the roadside occupation simultaneously.
Meanwhile, the traffic officials admitted the fact that the roadside occupation is among the main reasons behind the road traffic accidents, but stated that at present they have been focussing on the traffic norm violations.
“At present there is no such plan to take action against the roadside occupation, but in the times to come, the action against them will also be taken,” a traffic police official said.
