Ummar Jamal stresses importance of voter participation at KU Hostel event

Srinagar, Apr 26: Ummar Jamal, Co-founder of the J&K Center for Peace Research and Sustainable Development and a final year law student at Kashmir University, delivered an impassioned talk on the “Importance of Voting in Democracy” at the S.A Boys Hostel, University of Kashmir. The program was organized by the S.A Boys Hostel under the aegis of SWEEP, a flagship program of the Election Commission of India, aimed at promoting voter literacy and engagement.
The event, centered around the theme “Right to Vote: Importance of Vote in a Democracy,” witnessed Jamal’s fervent advocacy for increased voter turnout. He emphasized the critical importance of active participation in the political process, asserting that the fate of a nation cannot be left in the hands of a mere 10 or 15% of the population. In a society where politics permeates every aspect of life, Jamal underscored the imperative for citizens to actively shape the direction of their governance.

Drawing from personal observations, Jamal lamented the absence of many capable individuals from the political arena. He urged the audience to recognize the inherent value of their voices and contributions in shaping the future. “We need them,” he implored, emphasizing the necessity of good people stepping forward to participate in politics and effect positive change.
Echoing the timeless wisdom of Plato, Jamal reminded his audience of the profound repercussions of political apathy. Quoting the ancient philosopher, he emphasized that abstaining from political engagement ultimately leads to governance by individuals who lack the competence, integrity, or vision necessary to steer society towards progress.
The event, attended by Wardens of the S.A Boys Hostel, Dr. Javaid A. Sheikh and Dr. Sajad Hussain Wani, underscored the importance of fostering a culture of active citizenship and responsible political participation among the youth.
