Srinagar July 28 : Cricket and Kashmir share an unmatched passion. When it comes to this sport, the enthusiasm here knows no bounds—something that was evident last year when the Legends League Cricket (LLC) took place in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Shabir, a passionate cricket enthusiast, told Morning Kashmir that since last year’s LLC tournament, interest in the sport among Kashmiri youth has surged. He expressed hope that in the coming years, local players would get the opportunity to share the field with international stars. “Seeing their idols in person—not just on TV—gave the youth something to cherish,” he said. He emphasized that hosting such high-profile events is crucial, as it not only inspires young talent but also helps steer them away from social evils like drug abuse.
Ghulam Qadir, a former bowler and senior citizen, highlighted the tangible benefits of promoting sports. He praised Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for making last year’s tournament a reality but stressed the need for continuity. “Such events boost morale and strengthen the economy by creating opportunities for unemployed youth,” he said. He remains optimistic, noting that Kashmir’s improving situation has raised hopes for the return of star cricketers this year.
Morning Kashmir spoke to several cricket experts, young players, and sports lovers—all eagerly awaiting another chance to see their favorite legends at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium, which drew record crowds last year.
The tournament’s final match saw over 27,000 fans packing the stands, with the Southern Superstars securing a thrilling super-over victory against the Odisha Warriors. The electrifying atmosphere, filled with cheers and chants, left an indelible mark.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha described the event as a “moment of great pride,” noting that it was the first major cricket tournament in Srinagar in 36 years. “The cricket fever in the Valley and the overwhelming crowds reflect Kashmir’s transformation. This is the result of sustained peace-building efforts over the past few years,” he said.
Now, the big question remains Will the Legends League return to Kashmir this year? Can fans expect another season of unforgettable cricket at Bakshi Stadium?
Notably, the region has seen improved stability since the Pahalgam attack, with tourist numbers rising steadily. The administration continues to work towards creating an even more conducive environment for such events.
