UP Police take stern action through encounters, property seizures, court convictions, and raids on drug and conversion rackets
Zero tolerance strengthens law and order, accelerates economic growth in UP
UP emerges as one of the safest states with sharp drop in crime and exodus of criminals in eight years
Lucknow, August 1: In the past eight years, the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has transformed the state from a haven of lawlessness into a model of governance anchored in the rule of law. By adopting a policy of zero tolerance towards crime, the government has not only restored public confidence, but also created an environment conducive to economic and social development, paving the way for increased investment.
Before 2017, Uttar Pradesh was widely regarded as a lawless state. Under the previous Samajwadi Party government, incidents of riots, communal violence, extortion, kidnapping, and crimes against women were rampant. The term “One District, One Mafia” reflected the stranglehold of organized crime across the state. Fear had gripped the common citizen — business owners, women, and families were forced to either live under constant threat or migrate to safer places. The infamous 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots further dented public trust in the state’s law enforcement system.
However, following CM Yogi Adityanath’s rise to power in 2017, the administration initiated a series of decisive actions to dismantle the criminal network that had taken root. Under his zero-tolerance policy, the state saw a surge in police action against gangsters, seizure of illegal properties, fast-tracked court trials, and crackdown on unlawful religious conversions and drug mafias. The result has been a sharp decline in criminal activity and a significant improvement in law and order.
Today, Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a safe, secure, and investor-friendly state. With fear eradicated from the lives of its citizens and criminals either behind bars or on the run, the state is undergoing a paradigm shift.
In the past eight years, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has taken strict action against crime and criminals under its zero-tolerance policy. Over 240 dangerous criminals have been killed in police encounters. During this time, the police carried out more than 15,000 encounters, arresting over 30,000 criminals. More than 9,000 criminals were injured in these operations.
Following the Chief Minister’s instructions, the government also targeted the illegal properties of mafias and people involved in organized crime. Police and administrative teams ran joint operations and demolished properties worth crores of rupees using bulldozers. This broke the backbone of the mafia network and boosted public trust in the government.
In total, the police seized or destroyed illegal assets worth more than ₹14,200 crore over the past eight years. One example is from Prayagraj, where the illegal property of mafia don Atiq Ahmed was impounded and transformed into housing for the poor.
The Yogi government also focused on ensuring strict punishment through the courts. Under ‘Operation Conviction’, about 1 lakh criminals have been convicted so far. This includes nearly 10,000 criminals sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes like rape, murder, and organized crime. 68 criminals have been sentenced to death. On average, courts are resolving 143 cases daily and punishing 187 criminals each day thanks to strong legal efforts.
To stop the illegal drug trade, the government launched large-scale operations across the state. Raids were carried out on fake liquor factories, drug rackets, and inter-state mafia networks. Millions of liters of illegal liquor were destroyed and thousands of smugglers were arrested. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force was also set up. The police recovered illegal drugs worth over ₹2,737 crore and registered more than 30,000 cases against drug dealers.
The Yogi government has not only created a new policy against illegal religious conversions but also enforced it strictly. Under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, hundreds of people have been arrested, and several organized conversion rackets have been busted. These actions especially aimed to protect the rights of poor and Dalit communities who were being targeted by such activities.
Recently, strong actions were taken in districts like Prayagraj, Balrampur, and Agra. The crackdown on Jalaluddin alias Changur, a key accused in running an illegal religious conversion network, has been one of the strictest steps taken so far under this law.
Under CM Yogi’s leadership, the state police have firmly implemented the principle that “a criminal will either be in jail or out of Uttar Pradesh.” This approach has led to growing fear among criminals and a stronger sense of safety among citizens. As a result, Uttar Pradesh’s improved law and order has earned praise at the national level.
The state’s zero-tolerance approach toward crime has also had a major positive impact on the economy. With a safer and fear-free environment, investor confidence has grown, making Uttar Pradesh one of the fastest-developing states in the country.
Major projects like the Defence Corridor, Data Centers, Film City, and Industrial Corridors have attracted continuous investment. These mega projects are creating lakhs of job opportunities, boosting the state’s growth and improving the livelihoods of many families.
