Shopian, July 15: In a heartwarming initiative to strengthen ties with the local population, the Indian Army organised a special mela (fair) for the Bakerwal community at Dubijan, a remote area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the nomadic Bakerwal families, who are currently residing in the upper reaches of Shopian for their seasonal migration. Various stalls offering food, traditional games, medical checkups, and cultural performances were set up to engage the community, especially women and children.
Army officials said the purpose of the mela was to foster goodwill, build trust, and offer assistance to the Bakerwal population, who often remain isolated due to their migratory lifestyle.
Community members expressed gratitude for the gesture, stating that such events help them feel recognised and included. “It feels good that someone is thinking about us in these high terrains,” said one of the elders attending the event.
The mela concluded with a cultural programme, where local artists and children performed traditional folk songs and dances, celebrating the unique heritage of the region.
