Baramulla, November 4: Marking the historic occasion of Battle of Shalateng Day, the Indian Army’s Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo) organised a large-scale Ex-Servicemen Rally and educational outreach programme at Sharifabad Military Garrison on November 4, bringing together around 400 ex-servicemen and 200 students and teachers from Army Goodwill Schools across Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.

The programme, aimed at strengthening the Indian Army’s engagement with veterans and their families while familiarising the younger generation with the region’s military history, was presided over by Major General Tushar Sharma, Vishisht Seva Medal, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo).

The rally served as an important platform for addressing the concerns of ex-servicemen and their dependents, with dedicated helpdesks and awareness stalls established to facilitate access to Central and Jammu and Kashmir Government welfare schemes, Indian Army initiatives, pension-related services, documentation assistance and resettlement opportunities.

Representatives from various organisations, including JAK LI Records, Defence Pension Disbursement Office (DPDO), Srinagar, Zila Sainik Welfare Office (ZSWO), Srinagar, and Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), interacted with veterans and provided information and assistance regarding their entitlements and welfare-related issues.

Medical facilities were also made available during the programme, while dedicated interaction sessions provided ex-servicemen an opportunity to raise their grievances and seek guidance on matters concerning pensions, healthcare and post-retirement benefits.

Alongside the veterans’ outreach initiative, an educational tour was organised for students and teachers from Army Goodwill Schools, offering them an opportunity to explore the military establishment and gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the Battle of Shalateng and its place in the region’s military heritage.

The proceedings also featured a wreath-laying ceremony, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifices of soldiers, followed by cultural performances by students of Army Goodwill Schools. The address by the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of honouring veterans, preserving military history and strengthening the bond between the Army and the people.

The observance of Battle of Shalateng Day provided a meaningful occasion to remember the historic legacy of the battle while recognising the contribution of ex-servicemen to the nation.

Through the initiative, the Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo) reaffirmed the Indian Army’s continued commitment to the welfare, dignity and well-being of veterans and their families, while encouraging young students to remain connected with the region’s history and the values of service, sacrifice and patriotism.
