Colorectal lung CA more prevalence among females in Kashmir Study

Srinagar July 02: In Kashmir valley stomach cancer is more prevalent among the males while among the females colorectal and lung cancer is more common, reveals a study.
The information was revealed in a study published earlier in May this year investigated the incidence, demographic characteristics, and distribution of stomach cancer across the Kashmir Valley, with a focus on regional variations.
“The Study reveals that in a single centre Government Medical college hospital showed that stomach cancer was the most common incident cancer among males in Kashmir, accounting for 25.2 percent of cases, followed by colorectal cancer (16.4 Percent) and lung cancer (13.2 Percent).
“Among females, colorectal cancer was most common followed by breast cancer (6.1 %) and stomach cancer (10.4 %),” it reads.
The data further reveals that at the same centre, finding that the most common cancer sites in males were the stomach, followed by the lungs and colorectal region. “In females, breast cancer was the most prevalent, followed by colorectal and stomach cancers.”
Earlier this week, this newspaper published news that in Kashmir valley, among the majority of diagnosed cancer patients, more than 19.2 percent of patients were suffering from stomach cancer— highlighting the need for targeted public health interventions.
The study reveals that from 2014 to 2023, Kashmir recorded 5554 stomach cancer cases among individuals aged 18–90 years, with 4199 (75.59 %) being male and 1356 (24.41 %) being female.
It also states that the mean age in patients was 60.5 years. The highest number of cases was observed in 2023 (738 cases), while the lowest was in 2020 (440 cases).
“The mean number of cases per year was 558.1. The incidence rates of stomach cancer in the Kashmir region were calculated based on the data collected from 2014 to 2023, per 100,00 using the total number of new cases reported and the projected population for each district in 2023,” it reads.
