Free Wi-Fi service in Srinagar soon

SRINAGAR, AUG 28: The introduction of a cutting-edge public Wi-Fi system in Srinagar by Srinagar Smart City Limited is a significant step towards improving digital connectivity and modernising urban infrastructure.
This project is the result of prior bids receiving a poor response and then being re-floated, which attracted a lot of interest from prospective bidders.
The introduction of free public Wi-Fi in Srinagar is in line with the city’s ambition to develop into a digitally inclusive and modern metropolis. According to Athar Amir, CEO of Srinagar Smart City Limited, the programme intends to offer locals and visitors free, high-speed internet connection, encouraging innovation and enhancing access to online resources.
“We think that having access to the internet is no longer a luxury but a need and is essential to the growth of a city. The goal of Srinagar Smart City Limited is to make the city better connected and more technologically advanced. This goal will become more of a reality with the refloating of tenders for the public Wi-Fi infrastructure, which we are happy to announce.”
Amir went on to emphasise the value of citizen involvement in such initiatives, stating that “Srinagar’s citizens and visitors are at the heart of this endeavour.” The creation and deployment of this free public Wi-Fi infrastructure will be guided by their requirements and preferences.
“We are convinced that this project will increase tourism and economic growth in addition to enhancing the quality of life for Srinagar’s citizens.
Srinagar’s introduction of free public WiFi is anticipated to make the city a more dynamic, digitally linked metropolitan hub that will promote innovation, learning, and economic development.”
He claimed that this project is an important step in making Srinagar the smart, future-ready city that it has been envisioned to be.
Officials have reportedly identified eight “tentative locations” to be made Wi-Fi zones in Srinagar, citing an official document.
These locations include Lal Chowk, Zero Bridge on the Jhelum River, the three famous Mughal gardens of Chashme Shahi, Nishat Garden, and Shalimar Bagh, sections on both sides of the Jhelum riverfront, and the
“The purpose of the Wi-Fi zones is to provide high-speed internet access to citizens and tourists in areas of Srinagar with a high footfall, places of interest to tourists, and locations where other commercial activities happen,” the document reads.
However, free internet access will be provided to all users only for the first 15 minutes, followed by a paid option to continue internet access.
