GANDERBAL: The Indian Army, under the aegis of Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo), successfully organized the Paratrooper Shabir Ahmad Malik, Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) Half Marathon on March 29, 2026. The event served as a powerful tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Paratrooper Malik, a decorated Commando of 1 Para (Special Forces) and a proud son of Ganderbal.
The marathon saw an overwhelming response, with thousands of enthusiastic participants from across the district gathering at the historic Qamariya Ground. The event transformed into a vibrant celebration of unity, national spirit, and physical well-being, reflecting the growing sports culture in the Kashmir Valley.
The scenic route took runners through several prominent landscapes of Chapergund, the iconic Wayil Bridge and the townships of Lar and Barsoo before culminating at grounds of Sainik School Manasbal near the serene Manasbal Lake, where the participants endurance was met with a festive atmosphere. To ensure the safety of all runners, the Army established a comprehensive support system, including medical aid posts and hydration stations at regular intervals.
Born in Dab village and an alumnus of Sainik School Manasbal, Paratrooper Malik’s legacy continues to serve as a beacon of strength for the youth of the region. By naming the marathon after a local hero, the Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the “Jawan and Awaam” bond.
The event concluded with a clear message of hope, showcasing Ganderbal’s potential for hosting large scale sporting events that combine fitness with a deep sense of national pride and communal harmony.
