Baramulla, July 17th : Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla marked a momentous occasion today as it unveiled its latest achievement – the inauguration of the Bacteriology Section within the esteemed Department of Microbiology. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the college’s Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Ruby Reshi, Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, and Dr. Junaid Ahmad, the Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Microbiology, alongside other teaching and technical staff.
Dr. Junaid Ahmad, as Head of the Department, took the stage to provide valuable insights into the range of tests available at the newly established bacteriology section. These encompass an array of vital cultures, including blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, pus and other body fluid cultures, and urine cultures. This new expansion is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing the hospital’s infection control program, as it will facilitate surveillance studies in high dependency units, such as ICUs, theaters, and wards. By collecting this crucial data, the department aims to create hospital antibiograms, a valuable resource for developing an effective antibiotic policy. Such a policy will ensure the judicious use of antimicrobial agents, playing a significant role in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
Amidst the cheers and applause, the worthy Principal took the opportunity to extend her heartfelt congratulations to the Department of Microbiology for their relentless efforts in making this initiative a reality. She also laid particular emphasis on the proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste, underscoring the importance of environmental responsibility in healthcare facilities.
In her closing remarks, Prof. (Dr.) Ruby Reshi expressed utmost confidence in the future growth and expansion of the Department of Microbiology. She highlighted that with continued support from the administration, the department will continue to broaden its range of laboratory investigations in the near future, aiming to offer even more comprehensive and cutting-edge medical services to the region.
