SRINAGAR, DEC 10: In a significant move aimed at boosting the industrial sector in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has embarked on the establishment of 46 new industrial estates across the region.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Industries and Commerce Department, involves collaborations with Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) to ensure the timely completion of the projects.
To expedite the development process, prominent CPSUs such as NBCC and IRCON have been enlisted, with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) handling an additional six estates. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with NBCC and IRCON have set ambitious targets for the completion of these estates within 18 months, starting from April 2023.
During a meeting, the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir emphasized the need to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in various aspects, encouraging their growth for substantial employment generation in the region. He directed officials to establish timelines for the completion of work on the new industrial estates and ensure the timely operationalization of units by aspiring entrepreneurs.
The Chief Secretary also highlighted the importance of the PM Vishwakarma scheme, which provides comprehensive support to marginal artisans and craftsmen. He urged prioritizing the scheme for effective implementation and instructed officials to assist applicants in the registration process.
Reviewing the progress on Geographical Indication (GI) tagging, the Chief Secretary advised expediting the necessary formalities for securing GI tags for 11 products in the pipeline, in addition to the existing 10 already notified. The administration aims to enhance the number of authorized users in a time-bound manner.
The Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce, reported a substantial investment of Rs 2079.76 Crores in the UT till October 2023, with the previous fiscal year witnessing the highest-ever investment of Rs 2153.45 Crores. Discussions during the meeting also covered topics such as the single-window system, land development for industrial estates, utility availability, and the status of flagship programs monitored by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Chief Secretary concluded the meeting by stressing the importance of maintaining development momentum across various sectors and ensuring that the aspirations of stakeholders are met seamlessly. The ambitious industrial expansion project is poised to contribute significantly to the economic development of Jammu and Kashmir.
