SRINAGAR, DEC 10: In a concerning revelation, the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has released a report highlighting a significant surge in kidnapping and abduction cases in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years.
The report, titled “Kidnapping and Abduction in Jammu and Kashmir – A Comprehensive Analysis (2020-2022),” underscores a range of motives behind these incidents.
Jammu and Kashmir, ranking second among Union Territories, trails behind New Delhi in the frequency of abduction and kidnapping cases, as per the report. Among the total cases documented, 520 victims were children, while 932 were adults, with a significant majority being females.
Disturbingly, as of the end of 2022, there are 831 unrecovered victims from previous years, including 790 females and 41 males. However, the report brings a glimmer of hope by indicating that 1086 victims have been successfully recovered alive over the past several years, comprising 976 females and 110 males. Tragically, one victim was found dead.
The percentage recovery, which measures the ratio of total recovered individuals to the total number kidnapped or abducted, stands at 57.7% in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the NCRB report.
The rising trend of kidnapping and abduction cases in the Union Territory raises concerns about the safety and security of residents.
Authorities are urged to take immediate and effective measures to address the root causes of these incidents and enhance law enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of the population. The NCRB report serves as a stark reminder of the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat and prevent such criminal activities in the region.
