Srinagar July 30 – In response to mounting complaints of harassment and extortion faced by livestock transporters en route through Punjab, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has initiated decisive action by constituting a high-powered team to engage directly with Punjab authorities.

The move comes amid growing concerns among J&K’s livestock traders, who have reported instances of overcharging, intimidation, and obstruction while transporting animals to and from markets in other states. In an official communication accessed by this publication, the government has announced the formation of a three-member delegation tasked with addressing the issue through formal consultations.

The team comprises senior officials from key departments: Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller of the Legal Metrology Department; Mohammad Rafeeq Bhat, Deputy Director, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Kashmir; and Sham Lal Abrol, Deputy Director, FCS&CA Jammu.

As per the directive, the delegation will visit Punjab to hold deliberations with concerned departments and top officials of the Punjab Government. Their mission is to secure a structured and mutually agreeable solution that guarantees the uninterrupted movement of livestock across state borders.

Officials say the effort aims not just to resolve immediate grievances but also to strengthen the framework of inter-state cooperation in trade and transport. “The objective is to safeguard the livelihoods of J&K’s livestock traders and restore confidence in the inter-state trade mechanism,” the order noted.

Upon completion of their visit, the team is expected to submit a comprehensive report detailing findings, discussions, and proposed recommendations to the administrative department for further action.

Livestock transport remains a crucial economic activity for many in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the lead-up to major religious and seasonal markets. With this latest intervention, the government signals its intent to provide institutional support and ensure that trade flows without unlawful disruption.
