KPDCL cracks down on power theft amidst rising deficit

SRINAGAR, NOV 29: In response to a growing deficit in power demand and supply, the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has intensified its efforts to combat power theft across the region.

With over 58% of Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses attributed to power pilferage, the power department has issued stringent directives to KPDCL to curb this menace.

Thousands of consumers in Kashmir have faced fines as a result of the KPDCL’s proactive stance against power theft.

The move comes as part of a broader strategy to address the substantial gap between power generation and consumption in the region. The power department is striving to rectify a situation where power theft exacerbates the existing deficit, leading to prolonged power cuts and disruptions.

A senior official from KPDCL emphasized the measures being taken to crack down on power theft. “Those found tampering with distribution lines are being penalized. We have initiated night inspections to catch offenders in the act. Additionally, we have engaged religious leaders to preach to the public about the consequences of power theft and the impact it has on the community,” the official stated.

In a novel approach to deter potential power thieves, the KPDCL has decided to adopt a “name and shame” policy.

This involves publicly identifying individuals involved in power theft, serving as a deterrent to others who may contemplate engaging in such illegal activities. The public exposure is expected to not only penalize the wrongdoers but also raise awareness about the severity of the issue.

The power deficit situation in Kashmir has prompted a multifaceted approach, combining punitive measures with community outreach. By involving religious leaders in the campaign against power theft, the authorities aim to leverage their influence to dissuade individuals from resorting to illegal connections.

The nighttime inspections are a strategic move to catch offenders unaware, ensuring a more effective crackdown on power theft.

As the KPDCL intensifies its efforts to combat power pilferage, the hope is that these measures will contribute to a more stable and reliable power supply in Kashmir. The combination of fines, public exposure, and community engagement reflects a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of power theft and foster a culture of responsible electricity consumption in the region.
