PM Modi’s G20 masterstroke unlocks Kashmir’s tourism potential, foreign arrivals soar

SRINAGAR, MAR 06: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategic masterstroke of hosting the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar last year has catalyzed a remarkable tourism renaissance in Kashmir, with foreign tourist arrivals skyrocketing by an impressive 2.5 times.

Prior to the high-profile global event in May 2023, negative travel advisories had deterred foreign visitors from exploring Kashmir’s pristine beauty and rich cultural heritage. However, the successful hosting of the G20 meeting proved to be a game-changer, shattering long-held perceptions and unveiling the region’s immense tourism potential to the world.

In preparation for the prestigious event, the Union Territory administration invested significantly in upgrading tourism infrastructure, enhancing services, and promoting Kashmir’s diverse attractions. The global spotlight during the G20 meeting earned Jammu and Kashmir widespread international acclaim, solidifying its position as a premier destination.

The impact of the G20 meeting is particularly evident in the 2.5-fold increase in foreign tourist arrivals. Off-beat destinations and border area spots, once overlooked by visitors, have also witnessed a massive influx of tourists, eager to explore the region’s hidden gems.

Recognizing the surging demand, the government swiftly devised homestay guidelines, leading to the registration of over 1,485 homestays with a collective bed capacity of 13,000. This initiative not only provided quality accommodation options but also fostered community involvement and equitable benefit-sharing.

Furthermore, granting industry status to the tourism sector has opened the floodgates for investment, fueling unprecedented growth. Concerted efforts are underway to involve local communities in tourism activities, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive approach to development.

These strategic initiatives have paid rich dividends, with the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir witnessing an unprecedented surge in visitor arrivals. In 2022, the region welcomed an impressive 1.88 crore tourists, a figure that soared to an astounding 2.11 crore in 2023, reflecting the enduring appeal of Kashmir’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

The iconic Gulmarg Gandola, a testament to Kashmir’s breathtaking landscapes, attracted over 10 lakh tourists during the 2023-24 season, generating revenue exceeding Rs 100 crore. Furthermore, the development of new alignments and restoration of existing tracks leading to the Holy Cave of Shri Amarnathji by the Border Roads Organization has substantially improved access, safety, and convenience for pilgrims, further invigorating local tourism. As Kashmir continues to bask in the afterglow of the G20 spotlight, Prime Minister Modi’s strategic move has proven to be a masterstroke, unlocking Kashmir’s vast tourism potential and ushering in a new era of prosperity and global recognition.
