Over 2967 PMGSY projects completed in J&K

Srinagar, Aug 07: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an immense strength in rural connectivity as 2967 Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) projects covering 17,7,98 km connecting 2096 habitations have been completed.

In the last few years, there has been phenomenal progress in the implementation of schemes in rural and urban areas. Since Manoj Sinha took over Lieutenant Governor, there has been a considerable increase in the pace of schemes.

According to official figures available with Morning Kashmir, over 2967 PMGSY projects covering 17,7,98 km connecting 2096 habitations have been completed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Under PMGSY, J&K ranked number 3 at national level in terms of road length achieved. In 2016-17, J&K was at rank 9. While in 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22, J&K ranked 9, 11, 12, 9, and 3 respectively.

A senior official said, “In 2021-22, 3284 kms PMGSY roads were constructed, besides 7301 kms were blacktopped.”

PMGSY Programme was launched in Jammu and Kashmir during 2001-2002 with the aim to provide all-weather connectivity to unconnected habitations in rural areas with population more than 250 as per 2001 Census. Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India has sanctioned 3347 number of schemes under PMGSY-I in 12 Phases with a length of 18432.79 kms at a cost of Rs. 119646.76 crores to provide connectivity to 2148 eligible habitations.

From 2001 to 2022, at least 3,139km of roads have been built in the Union Territory that connected 114 habitations while six J&K districts out of 30 districts in the country under this programme have achieved the most length of road construction during the same period. The rural development ministry had sanctioned 3,347 schemes under PMGSY-I in 12 phases to construct 18,432.79km of roads at Rs 1,19,646.76 crore to provide connectivity to 2,148 eligible habitations across J&K. Under PMGYS-II, 107 schemes were sanctioned with a length of 704.55km at Rs 790.49 crore.
