Gulmarg, Feb 23: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday called for urgent adoption of artificial snow systems in Gulmarg, warning that unpredictable snowfall due to climate change is threatening the region’s winter sports ecosystem.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Winter Games, Abdullah said that traditional dependence on natural snowfall is no longer sustainable, and proactive measures are needed to maintain Gulmarg’s reputation as a global skiing destination.
“If we want Gulmarg to remain a world-class winter sports hub, we must adapt to changing climate realities. Artificial snow is no longer an option—it is a necessity to protect tourism, livelihoods, and the future of winter games in Kashmir,” the Chief Minister said.
He highlighted that inconsistent snowfall in recent years has disrupted planning and raised concerns among stakeholders dependent on winter tourism. Emphasizing economic implications, Abdullah noted that thousands of livelihoods—from hoteliers to transport operators—are directly linked to the success of the winter season.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he said investments in modern infrastructure and athlete support would continue to ensure year-round sporting activity and global competitiveness.
The Chief Minister also lauded Arif Khan for his achievements, expressing confidence that more athletes from Jammu and Kashmir will emerge on the international stage.
“Strengthening sports infrastructure alongside tourism development will help position Gulmarg among the world’s leading skiing destinations while safeguarding the region’s economy,” he added.
