SRINAGAR, OCT 13: In a significant agricultural development, the Director of Agriculture in Kashmir, Choudhary Muhammad Iqbal stated that a notable increase in paddy production, ranging from 5 to 10% this year has been recorded.
This growth is attributed to timely rains and favourable temperatures, creating a conducive environment for crop cultivation in the region.
Choudhary Iqbal conveyed this positive news highlighting the factors that contributed to this remarkable uptick in paddy production.
“We had completed seeding earlier,” he explained, “and although incessant rains initially raised concerns about paddy saplings this year, later climate conditions improved. We began paddy transplanting on time. When paddy saplings are planted before June 21, the crop has ample time for growth. Favourable rainfall and temperatures resulted in a production increase of 5 to 10% compared to previous years.”
The timely completion of seeding and well-managed transplantation, coupled with the improved climate, allowed paddy crops to flourish. Such a development is critical for the agricultural sector in Kashmir, as paddy cultivation is one of the region’s primary staples and a source of livelihood for countless farmers.
Furthermore, Choudhary Iqbal emphasized the efforts of the Agriculture Department to create awareness about the importance of agriculture and advocate for the preservation of agricultural land by promoting horizontal housing practices. “This strategy is designed to protect fertile farmlands from being transformed into non-agricultural spaces, safeguarding the foundation of Kashmir’s agricultural economy.”
While the increase in paddy production is undoubtedly a promising development for the region, not everyone is entirely convinced of the economic viability of agriculture in Kashmir.
A local farmer expressed concerns about the financial aspects of farming in the region, citing high production costs and relatively low revenue as major challenges. The issue of agricultural sustainability and profitability remains a subject of discussion and concern for the farming community.
The boost in paddy production offers a glimmer of hope for the agricultural sector in Kashmir, as it reflects the potential for growth and prosperity when nature aligns favourably with the efforts of dedicated farmers and agricultural authorities. However, it also underscores the need to address the economic challenges and hardships that many farmers face in the region.
The agricultural community in Kashmir eagerly awaits further support and initiatives to enhance the sector’s sustainability and economic viability. The increased awareness of the benefits of agriculture and the advocacy for preserving agricultural land are vital steps in this direction. The future of Kashmir’s agriculture will likely depend on a delicate balance between favourable environmental conditions and policies that support the financial well-being of its farming community.
