Srinagar July 02 : Dismissing speculations about a possible extension of the ongoing summer vacation in schools Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Yatoo on Wednesday clarified that there are no current plans to prolong the holiday period.
Speaking to reporters, the Minister stated that the existing 15-day summer break, which began on June 23 and is scheduled to end on July 7 is adequate. “We believe fifteen days are sufficient for students to rest during the hot weather. As per forecasts, conditions are expected to ease after July 4,” Yatoo noted.
In response to the recent heatwave across the Kashmir Valley, the government had initially adjusted school timings before announcing the summer break for all educational institutions. However, rising public demand for an extended vacation prompted the Minister to publicly reaffirm the government’s stance.
Yatoo assured that authorities would continue to monitor the weather and take appropriate action if conditions worsen. “We will reassess the situation after July 7, but any decision to extend the holiday will be taken only if absolutely necessary,” she said, adding that prolonged breaks can severely disrupt the academic calendar.
The Education Department’s position comes amid unusually high temperatures in several areas, sparking concerns among parents and students. However, the Minister stressed the need for resilience, pointing out that educational progress must not be compromised.
“Our children deserve both care and quality education. It’s a delicate balance, but the long-term academic interest of students must prevail,” Yatoo concluded.
