Over 6000 HIV positive cases reported in J&K

Srinagar, Jul 26: The prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has slowly tightened its grip as Jammu and Kashmir has reported over 6000 positive cases so far.

An official of J&K State Aids Control Society (JKSACA) said over 6000 patients have been reported in J&K so far. Majority of them are from Jammu region. Over around 2500 are presently receiving treatment in J&K.

The official said that there are many hidden cases which go unreported due to social stigma attached to it.

The official said that awareness plays an important role in preventing spread of the infection.

Dr Mohammad Shafi, a physician said early symptoms of the disease include fever, sore throat, nausea, skin rashes, general body aches and pain and headaches.

“As the infection progresses, the disease further weakens the immune system of the individuals,” Dr Shafi told Morning Kashmir.

He however said there is no cure for HIV infection.

“But it can be managed by proper treatment and care and the people with HIV can lead long and healthy lives,” he added.

According to doctors, reusing of syringes contaminated with HIV infected samples is a very potent cause of transmission. They say that it also causes due to unprotected sexual activities with multiple people and exposure of a person to sexual fluids during physical intimacy.

Doctors advise people not to share any intravenous drugs through needles and syringes. The doctors emphasise that HIV/AIDS is an illness due to behaviour and require a multi disciplinary approach to address it.
