Eye on Democracy: Elderly Couple in Lar Votes Post-Surgery

Ganderbal, Sep 25: A husband-wife duo, who had undergone eye surgery last month, from Lar area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, visited the polling booth in person to cast their ballots during the second phase of ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghulam Muhammad and Zeba, a couple, hailing from Lar area of Ganderbal underwent an eye surgery last month and are still undergoing procedures.
However, the duo despite facing eye-eight issues at present, didn’t stay at home on the poll day, but visited the polling station to cast their ballots.
They were accompanied by their son—Fayaz Ahmad, who was assisting both of his parents to the polling booth from the residential house for casting their ballots.
Speaking on behalf of his parents, Ahmad said it was not time to waste the vote, but casting the ballots was the only way to express ourselves and also the demands. “The ballot machines are our only voice and we didn’t want to lose this opportunity. Thus, I decided to accompany my parents to ensure that their right is not wasted,” he said.
He added that the elections are being held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time in the last ten years and nobody knows when the next time the people will be given the right to exercise their franchise. “We are living in this society and casting ballots is the only way to change things according to our choice. Sitting idle at home won’t help in resolving even a simple issue of getting adequate water supply,” Ahmad said.
Pertinently, 26 constituencies across Jammu and Kashmir underwent polling in the second-phase of three-phased assembly elections. The counting of votes will be on October 08, 2024.
